So, why did I choose a professor of Victorian Literature for the lead character in the Sidney Lake mystery series?
Although I was an English major at college, I refined my scope in graduate school at Drew Univ. in NJ and became hooked on Victorian Literature and, specifically the Bronte Sisters. As a member of the Bronte Society since 1987, I've also penned some articles for Bronte newsletters. Professor Sidney Lake, although pure fiction, is a character I feel very comfortable with.
Tillie James, the Gullah small business owner (Gullah Island Services) who keeps everyone focused in the novels, is her character modeled on anyone?
Tillie is a collection of a great many people. The person who is her main model is my grandmother's housekeeper in Brooklyn. She wasn't Gullah or Black she was Irish and White, but she was as tough as Tillie.
The Silver Quill Writers
Eight years ago, Tim Holland established a writers critique group named the Silver Quill Writers. This year (2025) the six current members of the group will be attending a variety of public events for book talks and sales. We will have a booth at a number of events with most being in the Hampton Roads, VA area.
